Stanardsville, Va. (June 2024) —Eleanor “Ellie” Wabnitz, a current resident at Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County, celebrated her 100th birthday on June 10th. This beloved member of The Renaissance family began her life in Watertown, New York in 1924 and spent most of her life serving others.

Ellie has dedicated her life to the well-being of children. For many years, Ellie taught special needs children and spent time as a social worker helping families navigate the difficulties of adoption. Even in her 80s, she was still teaching students at Ruckersville Elementary School in Stanardsville.

Ellie married George Wabnitz in 1946, and the couple had two children, Roger and Ruth. The family eventually moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, but they kept a summer home in Stanardsville. After George’s passing in 2013, Ellie chose to make Stanardsville her permanent home.

It has been a year since Ellie joined The Renaissance community and her life is full of her favorite things. She loves coffee, chocolate, knitting, enjoys reading, and even attends a book club. Music is her biggest passion, having been a member of her school’s orchestra and a habitual pianist and organist at church throughout her life.

“Most of Ellie’s relatives have already passed on ahead of her, so we at Renaissance have claimed Ellie as our own. She will forever be part of our Renaissance family. The team here wishes Ellie the happiest of birthdays on this milestone year,” said Beth Murphy, Executive Director of Renaissance Assisted Living of Greene County.
